São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro is a city in Brazil. Its complete name is “São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro” but everybody knows it as “Rio”. This city lies on the South Atlantic Coast above the Tropic of Capricorn, an area that enjoys warm tropical temperatures throughout the year. In the 15th century, Portuguese explorers arrived on the coasts of Brazil. Gonzalo Coelho sailed from Portugal and entered a huge bay in January 1502. Americus Vespucci was sent to explore this bay on New Year’s Day 1502; this beautiful bay named Guanabara (arm of the sea) by the Amerindians was renamed as “the January River” (Rio de Janeiro in Portuguese) by Americus Vespucci.

Portuguese people have inherited their traditions and language from Brazilians that’s why Portuguese is the official language in this country, although it has some particularities. There are other dialects and languages such as Spanish and Tupi Guarani around Brazil, but Portuguese is widely spoken by Brazilians.
