Portuguese culture dates back to prehistoric times. Celtics influenced Portuguese people so they adopted many Celtic traditions. ”Portuguese” derives from a Roman word: Portus Cale was a Roman settlement, Romans called this region Lusitania so the prefix Luso means “Portuguese”. Portuguese conquerors spread their culture in many continents such as America, Africa and Asia, so you can find many Portuguese customs in Brazil, Mozambique or Macau. This country currently has one of Europe’s most fascinating cultures.

Portuguese folklore

Portuguese folklore is part of this beautiful culture. It has found expression in music, art, literature, singing and painting. Portuguese people enjoy recreational activities such as bullfights, soccer or folk songs. They also have a rich history of crafts and arts, and Portuguese culture has inherited a particular building style to their colonies. You must not forget that Portuguese culture includes its people and its language.  

Portuguese immigrants have helped to spread their culture, so Brazilian’s predecessor from European culture is Portuguese, not Spanish.  Brazil is often referred to as a Luso-American country. Brazilian people speak Portuguese and their traditions are very similar to those in Portugal. Portuguese culture is without question a fascinating and complex subject. Over time several factors such as history, economics and politics have helped to create Portuguese culture.

If you decide to live or visit a Portuguese-speaking country, you will never regret it, because all luso countries have found their own identity and Portuguese culture has contributed to develop new ways to see those countries.
