Portuguese culture is considered by many people one of the most amazing, ancient and oldest European cultures. Portugal has been home to some important cultures such as: Celts, Romans, Arabs and Visigoths, which have contributed to the development of Portuguese Culture. Portugal derives from an old Roman Town called “Portus Cale”. Due to the large historical extent of the Portuguese empire, you can find many traits of this culture in many important countries around the world such as Brazil, Angola and Mozambique.  

Portuguese culture has also been an important influence on the development of many other cultures, providing a wealth of knowledge.

Portuguese language

With over 200 million speakers, Portuguese is the fifth most spoken language in the world. Portuguese enjoys official status in countries such as Portugal, Brazil, Mozambique and Angola. It is also spoken in many little European, Asian and African regions. Portuguese like French, Spanish and Italian languages belong to the Romance language family. 

Due to the importance of this language, there are many schools in some countries such as Uruguay and Argentina offering Portuguese language as a mandatory subject. According to UNESCO, Portuguese and Spanish are two of the fastest growing languages in the world, so learning Portuguese is definitely a good idea for anyone.

Portuguese traditions

Nobody can deny that Portugal has many traditions which are known worldwide, for example one of the most celebrated festivals is definitely “The Carnival” which dates back several centuries. Another important festival takes place during the summer. It is dedicated to the “Santos Populares” which are San Antonio, San Pedro and San Juan.  Corpus Christy is another important Festival which celebrates the Eucharist. 

Portuguese people

Portuguese people are characterized by their friendly and welcoming personality. Portuguese people, mainly those people who live in rural areas, are very superstitious and Catholic. They are also known for being hard working and adaptable people.
