London, the largest metropolitan area in the United Kingdom

As everyone knows, London is the capital of England and the United Kingdom. It is also the largest metropolitan area in the United Kingdom and the largest urban zone. In conclusion, it is one of the most important cities in the world, and since it is important, the city provides the right transportation services. London transports also constitute one of the oldest public transport systems in the world.

Ground or terrestrial transport

Train.

There are five kinds of trains that work in the city and three of them are private:

• London underground. The larger railway operating system is known also as the Tube. It is also the oldest metro system operating in the world. The 11 lines it has, connect the center of London with the suburbs.
• Docklands light railway (DLR). It is a rail system that works in the east area of England; it complements the service that is provided by London underground. Actually, it is focused on the district of Canary Wharf.
• Trams. It is another transportation service that works in South London. It was the oldest in the world. The wide tram lines disappeared by the middle of 20^th century, but until now it remains the tram network at its peak. The Kingsway tramway subway is the evidence of the old tram system.
• Heavy Railway. It is a private service that operates on the ground. It provides transportation services in areas that are not covered by the London Underground or Docklands light railway. Some of the terminals are Cannon street, Euston, King’s Cross, London Bridge, etc.

Bus

The bus service in the city is also recognized by the great service that it gives to people. If you live here, you will realize how good the bus service is. The government administers the concession of this service, and it sets the fares

Taxi

This kind of transportation is also administered by the government; the fare is determined by the use of a taximeter. The taxis in London are the only ones in the world that are driven by people who have previous knowledge about the city; they spend almost three years studying the city in order to provide a good service. 

Others

• There are vehicles drawn by horses, but they are only available for touristic purposes. 
• Bicycle taxis have recently entered the market. They’re not regulated; so, be careful before you take one of these kinds of vehicles.

London Air Transport

London provides excellent airport services. It has six airports; they are: 

• Heathrow Airport,
• Gatwick Airport,
• Stansted Airport,
• Luton Airport,
• London City Airport,
• And Biggin Hill Airport.

London water transport

People can transport by water because the river Thames is navigable. There is a service of river bus that is offered in the city. The city also has some canals that are used for private narrow boats and a regular water bus.
