Porcelain tower of Nanjing

Worldwide we know that there are 7 Middle Ages Wonders and one of them is the Porcelain tower of Nanjing (Nan Jing Da Bao En Si), which is located on the south bank of the Yangtze in Nanjing, China; this historical site was a pagoda constructed by the Ming Dynasty and it consisted in one of the largest buildings in China (with almost 260 feet of height and octagonal shape at the base), which was made of white porcelain bricks that reflected the sun rays. It’s said that the Tower was adorned with glazes, stoneware and Buddhist images; and the porcelain kept the tower cool during daytime, and the tower had a great illumination with over 140 lamps hung from the building at nighttime. The material used for the construction gives the building the name, because Nan Jing Da Bao En Si translation is Porcelain Pagoda.

China history

Unfortunately, this wonderful building does not exist, because, according to China history, since the early 19th century it was beaten by nature and finally was destroyed in 19th century, during the Taiping rebellion, when the rebels demolished the stairs inside and then destroyed it completely in 1856.

The reconstruction

Nowadays, the Chinese Government spends a lot of effort on the reconstruction and it makes visiting Nanjing and seeing where the tower once stood possible for tourists, but it’s not possible to walk right up to the wonder’s ruins.

It’s really sad to see the ruins of this ancient monument; and it gets worse when you know that the up-to-the-minute technology would have allowed us to see the Porcelain tower of Nanjing minute by minute through a Webcam. Webcams are a great way to know every corner of the world.
