The city of London

The city of London is a small but remarkable area of central London inside what is now globally recognized as London city or Greater London by its citizens. This tiny area is from where the now large metropolis developed, it has held the status of city since 61 AD and has maintained the same limits since the Middle Ages, when this area represented the entire extent of all London.

It is referred to as “The City”, just “City” on maps, and the Square Mile, since its size is of 1.12 sq. mi (2.90 km2). It’s important to note that the United Kingdom’s financial services industry is also referred to by these names due to its notable history being based in this area; the City is now a leading center of global finance, and during the 19th century, it was the world’s primary business center.

History of London

From the time where London city was the first and then the largest settlement of Roman Britain to 1965, when the government established that the city of London would absorb its surrounding settlements under the administrative division of “Greater London,” the city has been of prominent relevance to England history. Although the Mayor of London heads the entire metropolis, the country has a special and unique-in-kind division, dedicated to the Square Mile and headed by the Lord Mayor of the City of London. Despite this Corporation being under the administration of Greater London the former precedes the latter by more than a thousand years.

The Square Mile

With such a rich history and relevance, the Square Mile is a must for everyone hitting the Heathrow Airport. There are several remains of the walls of the city (originally erected by the Romans), and its streets suggest the history resting behind, like the main gates of the original city with names such as Moorgate, Ludgate, Aldgate and Bishopsgate.

Universities in London

Forty-three universities in London have earned the metropolis the largest concentration of higher education institutions in all of Europe for its university courses. With a ridiculous history as the top finance center, choosing a university here to study an MBA is surely a great idea that will allow you to soak in the City’s decades of experience as the world’s primary business center. Even if the business world is not your cup of tea, taking a language course in one of its 43 universities is certainly the best way to make your vacations fruitful; you can learn anything from French conjugation to Portuguese culture, while you find out why this city’s airport is the busiest in the world by number of international passengers.
