The Russian Federation

Russia, officially known as the Russian Federation, is the largest country in the world and the eighth most populous nation with 143 million inhabitants. It has very diverse environments and landforms. It has a lot of mineral reserves (oil, gas, coal, platinum, gold, chrome) and approximately one-quarter of the world’s fresh water. 

Since its rapid growth after Soviet times, Russia is one of the most visited countries in the European Union. It has rich cultural heritage, ancient cities, great natural variety, diverse regions and ethnic cultures. It has 23 UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The most touristic places of Russia

  • Moscow, Russia’s enormous capital, one of the world’s greatest cities with many impressive architectural constructions that make part of Moscow history. The most famous attractions of  Moscow are: the Saint Basil’s Cathedral, Cathedral of Christ the Savior, Saint Isaac’s Cathedral and Church of the Savior on Blood, Moscow Kremlin and Peter and Paul Fortress, Red Square, Palace Square, Tverskaya and the famous Tretyakov Gallery and The Hermitage museum along with the renowned theaters Bolshoi and Mariinsky.
  • St Petersburg, Russia’s cultural and former political capital, is home of many classical architecture, many rivers, channels and bridges. Its most famous attractions are: The State Hermitage Museum and the Winter Palace, Russian Museum, St. Isaac’s Cathedral, St. Petersburg History Museum, Kazan Cathedral, Smolny Cathedral and Convent, St. Petersburg Mosque , Summer Gardens, etc.
  • Kazan, called itself as the Third Capital of Russia, it is an attractive city in the heart of the Volga Region, it shows a mix of Christian Russian and Muslim Tatar cultures. It contains The Kazan Kremlin, a World Heritage Site.

If you go to Russia, don’t forget to take with you the most famous Russian souvenir, the matryoshka doll. Some other souvenirs could be handicraft, samovars, ushanka and papaha.
