Periods of British History
England passed through different periods in history; it’s known according to studies and result of scientific projects that thousands of years ago the area occupied now by England was covered with ice (glacial period); then due the weather, the ice melted and the territory became an island 8000 years ago approximately.
According to England history, the first territory inhabited by humans was Britannia and they were hunters and gatherers of food and they developed some simple stone tools and weapons.
- Prehistory: One of the most important remains of this era is The Stonehenge, which is supposed to have been erected between 2500-2000BC.
- Roman Britain: The Roman period is well-known for the first invasion of Julius Caesar and the second of Claudius; both dictators of the Roman Empire; in this period the population of England decreased due to the plagues; and it’s believed that the Roman London (area of London city) was established as a port.
- Anglo-Saxon conquests: German groups invaded England in the mid-5th century and they expanded continuously during the 7th, 8th and 9th centuries, in this era, many schools were established and the University of Oxford followed by the University of Cambrige, two of the most recognized universities.
- Christianization: The Christianization was influenced by Celtic Christianity and The Roman Catholic Church.
- Viking’s attack and English unification: The first Viking’s attack influenced the political and social geography of Britain and Ireland, after that England kings tried to unify the kingdom by regaining some territories.
- Middle Ages: England was characterized by wars in the country and internationally, and intrigues; on the other hand the production of daily products increased and trades of textile industry with other countries. In this period, England suffered a terrible plague, the Black Death, which killed almost half of the population and spread over Europe.
- Tudor England: After the great changes of England, finally the consolidation of the Government took place in the 15th century with Henry VII, in this period England experienced the Tudor Revolution in the Government.
- 17th century: The history of England passed by several Wars, one of the most important conflicts was the civil War that took place between Parliamentarians and Royalists.
- 18th century: In this period, the most important event was when the formation of the United Kingdom took place in 1707 and the Industrial Revolution that influenced worldwide with technological advances and modernization
