Chinese culture is one of the most colorful worldwide due to its long history and geographical conditions. Among the world’s ancient civilizations, the Chinese nation is the only one that has not experienced any major cultural disruptions. Through more than 5000 years, from the beginning of Chinese civilization to the present. Nowadays, the Chinese people proudly call themselves descendants of Yan and Huang. The Mongolian Plateau is in the North of China, to the West lies a desert and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and to the east lies the sea. These extraordinary boundaries have allowed Chinese culture to develop in relative isolation, resulting in its uniqueness. 

Today, China’s  cultural contributions are once again being overshadowed, this time by the country’s economic success.  Images of its billowing factories and booming cities are the focus of the world’s new media. Goods of all sorts bear the label “Made in China”. China has a powerful influence in the arts and reveals. The country’s rich cultural history has shaped the lives of the more than 1 billion people who live within its boundaries.

Chinese language, traditions, cuisine, and clothing are part of Chinese culture. Chinese people have preserved these customs for a long period of time. Confucius’ ideas and his followers have guided the lives of China’s people and leaders for about two millennia. Confucius was born in 552 BC, and though he received little recognition during his lifetime, he may be said to have become China’ most famous philosopher and teacher. His teaching, compiled mainly in a text known as the Lunyu, or Analects, inspired a rich tradition, known in the West as Confucianism, of philosophers, political leader, scholars and occasional religious figures that helped to shape not only Chinese culture but that of Japan, Korea, and Vietnam as well.   

Chinese art, music, poetry, bronzes and sculpture are also part of Chinese culture. Chinese people value its arts. They consider it very important to learn an art in order to complement their lives. Chinese musical tradition is at least 500 years old, one of the oldest and most highly developed of all known musical systems. Not only do written records confirm China’s long musical history, but archeologists uncovered a number of ancient instruments, including objects such as bronze bells and stone chimes. China also has distinct theatrical traditions, including Chinese opera. Over centuries, two main schools have developed quite refined kinqu, which started as a folk art, but which later became famed for being sophisticated and refined, and energetic jingxi (Peking) opera, so called because it is closely associated with China’s capital city of Beijing.

Most Chinese language schools consider it essential to teach their pupils Chinese culture as part of their language courses. They know that to learn Chinese is a complex process that involves many aspects of cultural life in China. Even their marina traditions are part of its history so it is also part of Chinese culture.
